Bach completed his first set of Preludes and Fugues for Das wohltemperierte Klavier in 1722, when he was Kapellmeister at Cöthen. In Bach's day the term "clavier" referred to all keyboard instruments in general. It is therefore difficult to decide on one particular instrument. Can these pieces be played on the piano without betraying the work? The question remains open, as is shown in this recording by Andreï Vieru on a Steinway concert grand.
