The great musical tradition of St Mark's Basilica in Venice is usually associated with the flourishing 16 th and 17th centuries, and such names as Adrian Willaert, the two Gabrielis and Claudio Monteverdi. Recorded in the bright acoustics of the refectory of San Giorgio Maggiore, this selection of pieces, dating from the first half of the 14th century onwards, shows that music was central to the celebration of important events at La Serenissima much earlier than we tend to assume.
