Dezember 1678 in Nether Ettington in der englischen Grafschaft Warwickshire in eine wohlhabende Familie hineingeboren, die entfernt mit den Crofts von Croft Castle in Herefordshire verwandt war. Seine Stellung an der Chapel Royal, der königlichen Kirchenmusik, verdankte William vermutlich einem Angehörigen dieses Familienzweigs, und zwar Herbert Croft, der 1668-1670 Dekan der Chapel Royal war, und später Bischof von Hereford.
