At a time when knowledge of Schubert was still very sketchy, Badura-Skoda scrutinized the princeps editions and manuscripts in order to establish Urtext editions which today are referential. He was also able to complete movements left unfinished without introducing music foreign to the composer. This collection of the Sonatas (by use of only those instruments which Schubert had in his own collection) has every chance of being considered by posterity as one of the most significant achievements.
