This recording features three aspects of Charpentier's instrumental music: The Sonate à huit was one of the first pieces of its type in France when it was composed around 1685. The Symphonies pour un reposoir were intended to accompany an outdoor procession, an organ naturally not being available; the Noëls, however, were composed for instrumental ensemble and organ.
