When Artaria, the firm to which Haydn most often entrusted his works, were preparing the Collection Complette des Quattuors, they asked Haydn to oversee the revision. The usual classification however follows the Pleyel edition, even if the latter showed little concern about authenticity. So it is regrettable that Pleyel's edition is generally used rather than Artaria's 14 vols. (arranged in chronological order) whose registration is a bold enterprise still in its beginnings.
