We know now that Purcell's three Funeral Sentences were not written for the funeral of Queen Mary in 1695, as Thomas Morley's settings were again sung on that occasion. Purcell's only contribution to the service was the composition of two pieces for slide trumpet as well as the anthem 'Thou knowest, Lord'. The pieces by Tomkins reveal his deep attachment to King Charles I; also included are Purcell's sublime a cappella anthems and Weelkes' moving anthem on the death of Thomas Morley.
