"Mambo means 'conversation with the gods' and originated from the African Bantu slaves who were introduced into Cuba. The music has been traced back to the European contredanse, in Cuba in the 18th century when it became known simply as the danza or danzón. Over time, players became less inhibited and improvisation crept in. Until the 1920s the danzon bands (tipicas) were brass heavy; then began to feature strings, clarinet, flute and specialist percussion." (James Murray)
