Ponce was the leading figure in the emergence of Mexican nationalism; his music also embodies a wide variety of influences. Nowhere is this more evident than in his writing for solo piano, and this third album (of eight) explores various facets. His 20 piezas are pianistic adaptations of Mexican folk songs and dances, some indigenous. Another element is his personalised use of Romanticism for example in the dazzling Bersagliera.
