Two ingredients, Bach and jazz, are tossed into a king-sized crossover bowl, yielding an unappetizing salad. Pianist Thomas Gabriel shuttles back and forth between playing portions of the D minor Concerto straight and either improvising on Bach's "chord changes" or taking off on his own. It doesn't come off, because Bach's linear language refuses to cooperate with Gabriel's emphatic, chordal jazz style, which resembles watered down Erroll Garner.
